Of all the careers in the world, being a dental hygienist is probably one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful to others and generally quite well paid. Many people become dental hygienists because of the simple training requirements and high demand for their job. Today, dental hygienists are more respected and are hired more quickly as more people maintain and take better care of their teeth. They also say that ultimately they feel accomplished knowing that they helped improve their patient's health, even if only in the smallest way (“Professional Interview”). The best description of a dental hygienist is a professional whose primary job is to teach their patients necessary oral hygiene skills and provide excellent dental care. They perform a variety of tasks in a dentist's office, such as applying fluoride treatments, removing plaque and stains, taking x-rays, removing sutures, placing temporary fillings and assessment of the patient's general state of health (Coin's career “dental hygienist”). Dental hygienists not only work in a dental office, but they may also work in schools, nursing homes, health clinics, and many other dental settings. Close contact is required to complete this work. Working with people is a daily thing in this profession, so you have to be able to communicate and get along very well with your clients. It is very important to possess certain characteristics such as excellent hand-eye coordination and great motor skills since dental hygienists work on their patients' mouths (Porterfield 4).
