In Markus Zusak The Book Thief there are several examples of the strength of friendship and the power of the human will to survive. Max, a Jew about to be deported, is saved by his Nazi soldier friend. When Max hides, his friend provides him with essential nutrients for his survival (Zusak 140). This act shows that no matter what, your closest friends are always there and will help you with an open heart. When Hans and Rosa take Max in, they are not thinking about their dwindling food supplies and minimal income, rather they are thinking about saving a life (Zusak 186). With the arrival of Max Liesel, she found a long-time friend who supported her and helped her through difficult times. When Max leaves and is captured, he is sent marching through the streets when he and Liesel meet again, they are overcome with joy (Zusak 510). This joy of finding himself gives Max hope and the certainty that someone will be waiting for him as soon as the war ends.
