  • Essay / Educational building: Architectural review - 793

Standing out as a mediator between the public condition of its location and the intrinsic private aspect of its program becomes essential for the educational building proposed for the town of Smallville. The building provides a public space that serves as the city's main square. The plaza directly engages the school and the city through the use of blade-shaped walls that dissect the overall public space, generating a multi-level state offering multiple levels of publicity, ranging from a collective, common space to a more personal public space. These areas have a gradient-like characteristic that becomes increasingly private as the plaza merges with the school space. The school uses the atrium-shaped plaza as an extension of itself, transforming it into an impromptu alternative performance space, cafeteria and gymnasium, meeting place or alternative teaching space. Likewise, this space also serves as the main venue for city events, such as fairs and balls. The building is designed as a series of folding blades that fit into the overall volume and begin to organize and shape the section and plan of the building. . These slats become the veil that sometimes hides the interior of the school and provides a sense of privacy while keeping the school's appearance accessible to the rest of the city. Such a feature allows two different conditions to occur in the building. The first, when the circulation of the building is oriented outwards, is revealed to the public as a narrative of the building's function, and therefore the real program is veiled. The second condition creates the opposite, where circulation takes place in a cavernous space with v...... middle of paper ......e material for the building. In addition, they are mostly adapted to the territory because they offer an appropriate climatic response. A similar strategy is used by Glenn Murcutt when choosing materials for his designs. Several problems have not yet been designed; however, there is an understanding of the necessary end result. The roof design must recognize and understand how water can be captured and distributed in a way that illuminates the architecture. The project's structural blades could play a vital role in water circulation and expression. Additionally, another consideration is how the second level floor plate can become an architectural element capable of entering into dialogue with the roof and didactically expressing the overall composition of the building; slats, floor plates, screens and roof.
