    College campuses across the United States have become places where students can unite and protest together instead of standing alone. Their chants and slogans were often met with violence and brutality by police and state authorities. One of the most infamous clashes occurred on May 4, 1970 at a university in Ohio. On May 4, 1970, students gathered at Kent State University and launched a protest after learning that more soldiers had been sent to war. In an attempt to control the situation, the governor of Ohio sent the National Guard to campus. This led to shootings on campus and four students being killed and nine injured. This only increased the outrage felt nationally. In turn, this tragedy inspired the song "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young Son. When asked about the motivation for his song, Graham Nash responded: "We are going back to keep the consciousness alive in the minds of all students, not only in America, but throughout the world...to be vigilant and ready to rise up and to be counted… and to ensure that the powers of politicians do not take precedence over the right of legal protest.” At its peak, the song reached number fourteen on Music
