  • Essay / Reflection - 764

It's my first semester of college here at Leech Lake Tribal College; and of the many required core courses I have, one of them was Pathways to Success. I found that I was surprised by all the topics we covered and how in-depth they were. I think when I reflect on the course, I really learned a good amount of useful things that I can build on and also use in the future. One of the very useful things I learned was a responsible and practical knowledge of budgeting and time. management. I've learned that it's best to follow needs and wants in a budget in order to get the most out of it. Things like personal needs should take precedence over leisure and entertainment needs; like buying music and movies online or buying that new shade of lipstick. As adults, we all need to learn that food and keeping the water heater in good working order and safe are obviously more important. Because; in the long term, when we all hope to achieve career success or better jobs with the help of our education; we can spend our money wisely and live a more comfortable and satisfied life. Another thing that goes hand in hand with success is good time management. I discovered that I myself am very bad with my time management and am a textbook procrastinator. I learned that there are simple ways to manage our time better; and that once you get comfortable with the routine of having a schedule, you really get more productive hours in your day. It also makes you feel more in control of your daily life; taking some of the stress out of deadlines and being able to meet them because you've given yourself the time to meet them. Among other things I learned and felt...... middle of paper...... The values as well as the subtle differences with his teachings compared to Anishinaabe values were really interesting. I plan to read more of Velma Wallis' works in the future and become more familiar with Native American literature in general. In conclusion, I feel like when I look back on this course that I really learned a lot and I'm glad I had the chance to take it. Even though I won't get an A and have attendance issues, I would do it again. I wish I could have attended all the classes and had better results overall. I will be taking classes in the morning and afternoon during my spring semester to avoid transportation issues in the future. I intend to strive to apply myself more and work harder to succeed in my studies. Ultimately, I know that I can do better and that the only real thing that can stand in my way to success is myself..
