  • Essay / Virgin Mary - 1144

The depiction of the Virgin Mary throughout the Medieval and Renaissance periods was important in that it helped elevate the status of women in Western society. Art and literature of the time presented the Virgin Mary as a human mother exhibiting divine qualities by being the Mother of God. The influence of these qualities is visible in Renaissance art and more particularly in the cathedral of “Chartre”. Renaissance literature also compared the role of Eve and original sin to that of the Virgin Mary and her chosen deity to give birth to Christ. The stained glass windows of churches in Renaissance Europe also depict typical biblical scenes to educate and symbolize the beliefs of the faith. The main reason for the growth of the worship of the Virgin Mary during the medieval and Renaissance period was her symbolic power which was emphasized. through art, sculpture and literature. It captured the imagination of Christians both through popular devotion and through a theological reflection of God in works created throughout the Renaissance. This was the image of the “Mother of the Redeemer,” representing the merciful goodness of the Savior and his mother as companion in her son’s work of redemption to show his divine right to his God. During the Renaissance, the Virgin Mary was dominant theme throughout this period where artists such as: Fra Angelico, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Bothicellical and Perugino were inspired to paint the Virgin Mary. The paintings show a pleasant, maternal-looking woman holding or caring for her child. The paintings capture Mary as human but make her appear divine. The child being Christ shows His power by giving birth to Him and caring for the Son of God. Essentially, providing love, care and protection to God's young child. For example, plate 15 and frame 23 show a compassionate and caring mother whose depiction is humanistic but larger or more encompassing in the painting than the baby Jesus. This implies its importance in the early life of Christ. This also shows the power or her earthly influence over the child even though she is a human and not a deity. This gives her a special place in the Church as the earthly Mother who is the most perfect of humans, other than Christ..
