Against Horse RacingGrace JacksonHave you ever been to a horse race? Seeing riders give their horses a pat and an apple after the race, people cheering on their horse as it runs quickly towards the finish line? Looks like a good time. But what happens to these horses once their race is over? What happens to people who put their family savings on the line? All horse racing should be stopped due to the welfare of the horses, the effects of gambling and lack of interest. Just as with the well-being of humans, horses are entitled to the same care and respect. We can't just use them as entertainment. But as you will see, unfortunately, this is not the case. Around 12,000 foals are produced each year for horse racing in England and Ireland. And normally only 50% is acceptable for racing. The rest of the horses are either sent to slaughterhouses, slaughtered, or led into a life of abuse. *(see below) There are many cases of horse meat being sold as “beef” or “pork”. Many fast food restaurants buy horse meat because it is much cheaper and consumers can hardly tell the difference between the two. It is illegal to sell horse meat as any other type of meat. So this is not only horrible, but illegal. Have you ever eaten horse meat? You might get it in your "beef" or "pork" (because they sell horse meat like the Canadian one) but let's hope not, because it is poisonous to humans. The meat we eat daily could be horse meat and poison our body. Additionally, years of inbreeding make horses' legs small and fragile. Their ankles are the same size as humans and their bodies weigh more than 1,000 pounds. If they can barely support their own weight, how should they be able to support the weight of their riders? Additionally, ... middle of paper ... for years, companies have been telling the public that their hair and skin are thick enough to not harm them, and the public has believed them. But now the public knows the truth and knows not to support this kind of abuse. If no one likes horse racing anymore, what's the point? On a daily basis, horses are mistreated, people begin a long downward spiral into horse racing gambling addiction, and fewer and fewer people watch horse racing. But we can stop everything, with a simple gesture. Stop all horse racing. You can get involved by telling more and more people about it, or with "Horse Racing Week" and stop all the horses that are born and have nowhere to go except to the slaughterhouse. All the families of people who worry all the time. Let's help. We cannot let one more horse die running a race for a greedy and selfish horse racing industry...
