  • Essay / Impact of Technology on Global Society - 738

Over time, millions of inventions or more have taken place. However, few, if any, have had as much impact on global society as the computer. It is difficult to find a part of the civilized world where a computer, somewhere, does not have an effect on it at some point. Computers impact the way we learn, the way we do business, the way we receive news, and the way we communicate with other people on the other side of the world. Computing really became prolific with the advent of the Internet. Before the Internet, it was ARPANET. A network of four computers established as a proof of concept between four research teams, each with a computer at the following locations: University of California at Los Angeles, University of California at Santa Barbara, Stanford Research Institute and University of Utah. Since then, our education systems have not looked back. Before the computer and the Internet, if a student wanted to look up something from the past or do research, they would go to the library, or if they were lucky, their family would have a set of encyclopedias with directories. Computers make it easier and less time-consuming for students to complete certain aspects of research projects. Through computers, students can participate and interact with other students from different cultures thousands of miles away. Computers create a world of information, libraries full of books, foreign cultures and new friends just a mouse click away. This early learning to use computers often provides the foundational skills needed in many jobs in today's job market. Today, most businesses use IT technologies in many aspects of their management. Computer programs that calculate employee salaries are an area where companies rely on computer technologies....... middle of paper...... 6 hour report, people on site are now able to post event details, photos and other facts on various social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and the list goes on. Computer technologies bring news and world events to our fingertips about as quickly as they happen. The Internet and computing as we know it today came into being about fifty years ago. The impact of computing on society is impossible to quantify, and as quickly as technology evolves, there is no reason to believe that society as we know it today will not be very large in fifty years. Today's society would become unrecognizable if computers and computing technology were removed. Computers have become so ingrained in daily life that it would appear that civilizations are returning to the Dark Ages if we wake up tomorrow without a computer..
