She attended a cancer support group at her mother's request. There, she met a 17-year-old boy named Augustus Waters, who had osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer), who was there to accompany a friend named Issac, who was suffering from eye cancer. After the meeting ended, they met outside and Augustus Waters. told her she looked like Natalie Portman in Vendetta. There they felt a spark between them and Augustus invited her to his home. At Augustus' house, they watched a movie and hung out. There, she revealed that she had thyroid cancer that had spread to her lungs and that Augustus suffered from osteosarcoma, but he was cured after his leg was amputated. She thought that if Anna's mother survived, then maybe her mother (Hazel's mother) would also survive her death. But when she sent these questions to Van Houten, he responded via email that these questions required answers he could only provide in person. So, he invited her to his home in Amsterdam, if she was ever there, she could come by. A few days later, Augustus invited Hazel to a picnic where he told her that there was a charitable foundation that granted the wishes of these fighting children. with cancer. Fortunately, they granted Augustus' wish. Then he surprised Hazel that the foundation agreed to send them both on a trip to Amsterdam. This news made Hazel happy and realized that she loved Augustus very much but if she fell in love with him it would hurt her more than the pain of death itself. She compared herself to a grenade...
