In the Middle Ages, the unicorn was considered a strong and fierce animal associated with chastity and virginity. It was around this time that unicorns began to appear in artwork and tapestries. Unicorn tapestries have been one of the most popular wall hangings since medieval times. The Unicorn Tapestries are a set of seven tapestries dated ca. 1495-1505 from Brussels. They each measure 12'1" x 8'3". These are Franco-Flemish works and are commonly called The Unicorn Hunt. Unicorn Tapestries is located in the Cloisters in northern Manhattan. The seven tapestries in the series are The Hunt Begins, The Unicorn is Found, The Unicorn Jumps Out of the Stream, The Unicorn at Bay, The Mystical Unicorn Hunt, The Unicorn is Killed and Brought to the Castle, and The Unicorn in Captivity . The tapestries serve as illustrations to the story of the main character, the Unicorn. The tapestries were first discovered among the possessions of François VI de La Rochefoucauld after his death in 1680. They were later seized by mobs during the French Revolution and were mistreated. At one time, tapestries were even used to cover vegetables in a barn. This resulted in damage such as the loss of several feet of fabric. The tapestry that suffered the most damage was the fifth tapestry in the set, The Mystical Hunt of the Unicorn, of which only two fragments of the original tapestry remain. The tapestries were restored, with missing pieces rewoven and replaced with pieces from other tapestries. Unicorn Tapestries sometimes appear like paintings when viewed from a distance and even when viewed in photographs. They are known for their charm, the richness of......middle of paper......the theory and interpretation that the unicorn represents Christ comes into play. The resurrection of the unicorn can be compared to the resurrection of Jesus Christ in a heavenly garden. Another interpretation of tapestries as a wedding gift can see the story of the unicorn being a lover who endures various trials to win the love of his wife; he had to suffer to win her heart. In the final tapestry, the unicorn now wears the "chain of love" around its neck and surrounded by a fence, perhaps to show that it is now tamed and domesticated by the affection of its lady. The juice from the pomegranates above falls onto the unicorn's white coat. also has a different meaning. The seeds of the fruit represent the unity of the Church and the hope of the Resurrection. It is also used to represent royalty and the many seeds represent fertility and the children that will be produced through marriage..
