  • Essay / Examples of Lower Class in America By Gregory Mantsios

Nevertheless, our social structure is not a brick wall where individuals are trapped within their social class. Through education and opportunity, we are still able to shape our lives and realize our full potential. Harlon L. Dalton emulates this possibility in his story about Horatio Alger: “neither Alger nor the myth suggests that we begin equal. Nor does the myth necessarily require that we have equal opportunities to succeed. Rather, Algiers’ point of view is that each of us has the power to create our own opportunities.” (262). Dalton advances and asserts that individuals are born into a dark social class; he or she can always take a break and go up to class. Dalton's idea could happen to anyone, but the possibility is very slim. It is a harsh reality that a person from a lower class who does well in school has the opportunity to attend a university and also a full course. In reality, the group with more resources has a better chance than those with less help. The greatest opportunity for individuals to succeed is to educate themselves, something the government must be aware of. The infrastructure of the school system must provide additional support to those who cannot afford the expensive means of private schools.
