  • Essay / Research Paper on the Last Days of Socrates - 1014

Many major religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam believe in one god. The religion of classical Greece was very different. The ancient Greeks believed in many different gods. But like today, religion played a key role in their culture. The ancient Greeks lived their lives to please the gods. In “Euthyphro” from “The Last Days of Socrates,” Socrates appears to disbelieve in the elements of classical Greek religion. However, later in "Phadeo", Socrates seems more accepting of classical Greek religion, perhaps knowing that he is about to die. As Socrates says: “And those who have chosen the part of injustice, tyranny and violence will pass into wolves, or into hawks and kites; where can we suppose them to go? (Phedeo 2734). Socrates leans toward his acceptance of the afterlife, giving us a better understanding of religion in the classical story.
