Essay / American Foreign Policy and Global Activism - 920
American foreign policy has undergone many changes during our 200 years as an independent nation; our position as a world power has required us to participate in world affairs, even when public opinion does not support us. After World War II, we were rivaled only by the Soviet Union as a superpower; our policy at the time was to establish a just world order while protecting that order from threats that could destroy it (i.e. communism). After the end of the Cold War, the United States was undecided about what type of foreign policy to establish, because before the end of the Cold War, American diplomacy was focused on combating the spread of communism. The answer to this question came in the academic article I read; the threat to the world order, instead of coming from a large enemy (the Soviet Union), it now came from a smaller but equally difficult number of small countries. The United States' military involvement in world affairs during the Cold War, and its support with an anti-communist ideology, is largely linked to the Korean and Vietnam Wars; but during President Reagan's term, the United States was also involved in the wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador. When the "Sandinistas" took power in Nicaragua in 1979, the U.S. Congress barred the president from providing aid to the "contras" who opposed Nicaragua's new anti-American government. After the United States discovered that the "Sandinistas" were providing aid to the fighters... middle of article... crisis over the state of Iraq that remains relevant to this day. In conclusion, my report on the academic article "The Case for Global Activism" relates directly to the module as it explains how foreign diplomacy in the United States evolved from World War I to America 'Today. From our “communist containment” goals such as combating Sandinista influence in Central America; a post-Cold War foreign policy based on the protection of American interests. Concerning “Operation Desert Storm” and the “War on Terror” after the September 11 attacks; I read the information given about our change in foreign policy and related it directly to the era studied in this module. One thing remains certain, our foreign affairs policy will continue over time and with each change, we will adapt in the interest of the progress, interest and security of our nation..
