  • Essay / Clandestine Drug Labs and Fire Departments

Clandestine laboratories pose a great risk: For the individuals who produce these toxic concoctions, they do not realize how dangerous and volatile these chemicals are. These chemicals cause three main types of damage. (1) physical injuries from explosions, fires, chemical burns and toxic fumes. (2) environmental hazards and (3) endangerment of the surrounding area/endangerment of children. ()The most popular drug produced by clandestine laboratories is methamphetamine. Methamphetamines are made from cold medicines, herbal pills and nutritional supplements. This is achieved by boiling pills in hydriodic acid and red phosphorus, the red phosphorus comes from matchsticks. Iodine is also used and is obtained from pet stores. These products are combined and brought to a boiling temperature then filtered so that the final product is converted into methamphetamine. Once the production cycle is complete, the byproduct is properly disposed of, resulting in the risk of chemical and thermal burns to law enforcement, cleaning personnel, and future residents. There are three main cooking methods for producing methamphetamines. (1) The 2-phenyl-propanone (P2P) method, the red phosphorus (red P) method and the Nazi drug (lithium or sodium reduction). The P2P method is less common today due to the strict regulation of phenylacetic acid. Most methamphetamine manufacturers use the other two methods in which pseudoepedrine and ephedrine are the primary chemical precursors. Both of these substances are found in cold medicines and match heads. Ecstasy is a stimulant and mild hallucinogen. Ecstasy produces rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, malaise, muscle cramps, panic attacks, convulsions, nausea... middle of paper...... only.
