The word bullying is heard almost everywhere, but what does the word actually mean? The definition of bullying according to Dan Olweus, the creator of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted negative actions, involves a repeated pattern of behavior over time, and involves imbalance of power or force (Olweus). Bullying not only affects the victim, but it also affects bystanders around the incident and even the person doing the bullying. There are many forms of bullying, but the one that stands out above all others is racial bullying. Racial bullying is offensive action against people because of the color of their skin, their cultural or religious background, or their ethnic origin. Racial bullying negatively affects thousands of children every day around the world. More prevention programs and counseling are needed to stop this horrible act. Students tend to bully because they crave power and find satisfaction in causing pain to other students; they often feel rewarded for their behavior. Ultimately, bullying doesn't just affect the victim and the person doing the bullying. According to Olweus, nearly one in five students in the average classroom are bullied in one way or another (Olweus). The article also describes how there is a cycle of bullying and that there are over seven different roles that play a role in bullying. There are the students who bully, the followers, the supporters, the passive supporters, the disengaged bystanders, the would-be defenders, the defenders, and the student who is bullied (Olweus). The first is the student who bullies, the student wants to bully and take a leadership role in front of the school. Followers are the students who feel ...... middle of paper ......ied but everyone is around the situation. Bullying has many long-term emotional and physical effects on students. Suicide rates related to bullying have increased in recent years. If harassment is a problem, racial harassment is an even bigger problem in America. Racial bullying has been a problem everywhere for many years and causes a person to feel unsafe about their race or culture. More prevention measures and anti-bullying tactics should be offered in schools to help end this persistent problem. Works CitedMcDonald, J. (April 13, 2010). Anti-bullying solutions.
