The story begins with sixteen-year-old Lia getting ready to go out to school. Lia lives with her stepmother Jennifer, her father and her younger half-sister Emma. Right from the start, we see Lia hiding her feelings. Her stepmother Jennifer casually told Lia that her best friend had died; or rather was found dead in a motel room. Lia pretends she doesn't care and pretends she doesn't feel anything. In reality, she's just cold.
