Functional activities limited by people with age-related macular degenerationIntroductionActivities of daily living (ADLs) refer to self-care tasks. It is classified into basic ADL (BADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL). The former is essential for patients in life, such as diet and personal hygiene, while the latter is for community functioning, such as shopping. This may seem easy to a normal human being. However, for a visually impaired patient, even a very simple task will be a challenge. Low vision refers to a visual impairment that cannot be corrected by surgical or medical means or by standard refractive correction. Visually impaired patients must have distance acuity of 6/18 or even poorer light perception, or significant visual field loss. With such poor visual acuity or visual field, visually impaired patients may experience difficulty in daily activities. This article will show different types of functional activities that will be limited by visually impaired people and will mainly focus on a specific group of visually impaired patients, exudative age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). AMD is a degenerative disease that affects the macula, which will cause progressive loss of vision leading to visual impairment. Exudative (wet) AMD is less common than non-exudative (dry) AMD, but it will cause progressive vision loss. and is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, while dry AMD will also have a chance of progressing to wet AMD. This article will cover both basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) limited by AMD patients.
