Essay / Limits... what are they for? - 1841
Borders...For what? There seem to be no boundaries when it comes to scientific progress. Scientists are struggling to find exciting new procedures that are supposed to improve our lives. In doing so, I think they are getting out of control. Advances in science and technology today have raised some very interesting and controversial questions. These days, it seems that many scientists are on a mission to create the perfect human being, but in doing so, they break many ethical boundaries. Do scientists know when enough is enough? That is the real question. With the use of such scientific and technological advances, it is amazing what scientists can do with this information. They often think not in terms of the world but in terms of themselves. Who among them can discover the next big thing in science and technology, who can find that cure. It’s a whole game that’s not fair. There is a lot of madness in science, and it has consequences. Take Dr. Frankenstein for example. In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, she created a character who defied all scientific and technological boundaries of the time. It was illegal to work with corpses, especially for the purpose for which he was going to use them; which consisted of selecting the best parts of the creature he was going to give life to. He set out to create a "superhuman being" from inanimate objects, and he succeeded, but he ultimately paid the price. He spent two grueling years, consisting of long days and sleepless nights, with the sole aim of creating life from nothing. “For this I deprived myself of rest and health, but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream disappeared, and breathtaking horror and disgust filled my heart” (Shelly 234). Dr. Frankenstein crossed the line and tried to play the creator, and finally got what he deserved, a monster. He abhorred Frankenstein so much that he chose to keep him away from the world. Which was really unfair to the monster, given that he was created with the sweat of Dr. Frankenstein's brow. Sometimes all this scientific information can get you into trouble. If Dr. Frankenstein had not continued his role as God, he would not have created such an ugly monster in his eyes..
