Essay / Intellectual disability (mental retardation) explored...
In the 1993 film "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", a young boy (Gilbert) must care for his younger brother (Arnie) who suffers from mental retardation, while taking care of their obese mother. Arnie is very dependent on his brother who bathes and watches him at all times. Arnie's symptoms are very clear throughout the film, including communication, health, safety, self-care, and home life (Grohol, 2013). Caring for a younger sibling alone must be difficult enough without them suffering from mental health issues. Their obese mother has not left home for years because of their father's suicide by hanging. The whole town makes fun of their mother and it makes their lives even more difficult. Gilbert and his two sisters constantly work through their youth by cooking, cleaning, and looking after Arnie for their mother, as she cannot either because of her disability. Caring for a disabled person can be difficult, but love and support is what they need most and that's why I chose to discuss this film and this family. Although Gilbert is sometimes distracted from watching and caring for Arnie by events in his own life, he never complains about his role as caregiver to his mentally retarded younger brother. Diagnosis and SymptomsMental retardation has been renamed intellectual disability in the DSM. -5. This was to avoid relying on IQ test results for the diagnosis of mental retardation and to try to rely more on the daily tasks one should perform based on one's age and mode of cultural life. There are four levels of mental retardation: mild, moderate, severe and profound. (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2011). The least serious of these is mild mental retardation.
