  • Essay / Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory and Purpose...

I believe that using these two theories results in higher quality care for our patients. Goal Achievement Theory really helps build a strong relationship between nurse and patient because communication plays an important role. Goal Achievement Theory allows the nurse to identify a patient's goals, then it promotes communication between the nurse and the patient to identify obstacles and finally, it gives the nurse the opportunity to provide resources or support the patient to achieve the goals the team (patient and nurse) have taken (Holaday, 2014, p. 262). The Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory provides guidelines for being able to obtain data, analyze it, and create a plan of care for patients when questioned whether they can perform independently their own activities of daily life (Holaday, 2014, p.248). I believe these two theories provide the framework needed to detect items that may have been missed and promote a strong relationship between nurse and patient. I strongly believe that in nursing, communication is one of the most important factors and it seems that both of these theories are based on my own personal beliefs.
