Essay / Negative Side of Social Media - 1363
According to S. Craig Watkins in the article “Quick Entertainment and Multitasking in an Always-Connected World,” Watkins explains how the Internet has made the younger generation better multitaskers: “But the Young people and digital people are widely regarded as masterful multitaskers, capable of handling multiple technologies, screens and conversations smoothly and simultaneously. They usually multitask and, according to many observations, they also do so instinctively” (Watkins 397). Watkins admires the talent this generation is acquiring through the Internet and the technology around it. All these young people are able to do three or four things at once, whereas in the 1970s or 1980s it seemed impossible. They are able to do this because they need to get things done quickly and in a short amount of time, or they may need some type of side hustle that can help them relax while they work. Not only has the Internet helped develop this incredible multitasking talent, but it has also brought fast-paced entertainment over the past four or five years. Watkins says, “No matter where we are, quick entertainment is usually just a click away. I liken the effective delivery of digital media content to another staple of the daily American diet: fast food. Just like fast food, fast entertainment is easy to get. All around us, and generally cheap, but not always good for you” (Watkins 393-394).
