Pike by Leota. During the first half of the story she tells Mrs. Fletchers "Mrs. Pike is a lovely girl, you'd be crazy about her", but in the second half of the story she says "she acts like if she thought she was Mrs. God” (Welty 1097, 1102). Only a week had passed and she had gone from charming to arrogant. This also applies to Billy, the Pikes' son. At first, Leota says "he couldn't do anything wrong", but later says "this mean little old man here, getting under my feet every minute of the day and answering too" (Welty 1096, 1102). Her jealousy of Mrs. Pike getting this reward led Leota to change her perception of them. She doesn't even care that Mrs. Pike helped arrest a man wanted for raping four women, she sums them up as "worth a hundred and twenty-five dollars each" or rather she assumed that was how Mrs. Pike was. would feel (1103). But it doesn't seem like she would be offended if she did, she was angry that she didn't get that reward, because it was her.
