Essay / Summary of At The Gym by Mark Doty - 1245
When we've reached this point, it's a decision on what we'll do next. Should we stumble and fall, or continue to find the will to overcome? Doty recognizes that the burdens can be too much to handle alone. He recommends getting advice and guidance from those around us; “Who can say who has added his warmth to the nimbus of our intention” (line 20). Mark Doty assures us that in these difficult times, we are not alone. This line recognizes those who have helped us along the journey of life. One person's strengths may be another's weaknesses. Some may be dominant in chest exercises while others may be weak in shoulder workouts. Their domination of a particular workout didn't happen in an instant, however. This required continued determination. In weightlifting, there are times when you want to challenge yourself and lift more than you think you can. During these times, assistance may be needed to push that weight the last few inches. A spotter will help you achieve this goal. Experience with workouts leads you to understand how much weight you can lift. In turn, you are able to become stronger and lift much more than you could in the beginning.
