Imagine the clear, brilliant blue water of the Great Barrier Reef filled with bright, colorful fish and beautiful corals. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world and is home to many different species of marine animals. Our generation needs to learn more about this beautiful ecosystem so that we can protect it from damage for future generations to enjoy. The Great Barrier Reef lies off the coast of Queensland, Australia in the Coral Sea and is the "world's largest reef system". (greatbarrierreef.org). Because the reef is so large, it is considered one of the “seven natural wonders of the world” (greatbarrierreef.org). According to unmuseum.org/7wonders/greatreef.com, the Great Barrier Reef is over 1,000 miles long and covers an area of over 133,000 square miles. The reef system is made up of more than 2,900 individual reefs and has more than 900 islands.
