In The Republic, Socrates divides the soul into three hierarchical parts, desire, emotion, and reason (being of utmost importance). Socrates says: “It is fitting that the reasoning part should rule, for it is truly wise and exercises foresight on behalf of the whole soul, and that the spiritual part should obey and be its ally” (The Republic IV.441e4-6). Socrates explains that an individual's ability to balance these aspects of their soul leads to justice in the individual. “When the parts are thus organized and balanced, they are in “harmony”” (“Plato’s Reason and the Other Parts of the Human Soul”). This notion of balance of the soul which makes a man just, and therefore the individual acquires harmony, brings us back to the notion of the inclination of a group.
