Dr. Haim Ginott, renowned psychologist, mentor and teacher, once remarked: “Children are like wet cement; everything that comes their way makes an impression. So the effects of absent fathers on children may actually shape their perceptions of the world around them. Although developing a stronger relationship with one parent is an effect of fathers' absenteeism, it also comes with challenges related to engaging in early sexual activities, diminished cognitive development, and poor academic performance, which is an effect manifested by many girls. Absentee fathers are defined as those who do not converse regularly with their children and therefore do not play a major role in their development. This effect occurs because both mother and daughter have the opportunity to participate in shared responsibilities that will help them grow as individuals. The girl will develop characteristics such as teamwork, a healthy work ethic and self-confidence, which are three (3) important character traits that will serve her well into adulthood. Mothers can show their daughters what it means to be independent and strong instead of depending on a man to do everything.
