Justice and human rights have changed over the years in South Africa. Many human rights violations took place during the apartheid period in South Africa. (1948-1994) Actions and efforts were carried out by groups and individuals that helped end the apartheid era in South Africa. Dating back to 1948, the apartheid movement was a formal social system consisting of racial segregation and discrimination. The main problem with apartheid was that the smaller population of whites controlled the larger population of indigenous black Africans. Many human rights violations took place during the apartheid era in South Africa. White Africans controlled many high-level government positions. The white population of South Africa during the apartheid era never exceeded 20 percent of the total South African population. Although black South Africans held the vast majority of the population, approximately 87 percent, most land ownership belonged to white South Africans.
