  • Essay / Effective Listening: The Interpersonal Process...

One of the most crucial steps, in my opinion, is responding to the speaker. The book Interpersonal Communication Everyday Encounters describes the act of responding as “communicating care and interest” (Wood, 2014, p.167). The response should not take place only after the speaker has finished. Instead, we should respond throughout the interaction. Responding while listening is often a use of nonverbal skills and can range from nodding your head to vocalizing a phrase like "I understand" or "Go on." You should also be aware of your posture, eye contact, and hand movements when participating in this form of active listening. In an example of a wrong response while watching the television show "The Office", Dwight, an office worker, is taught by the women in the office how to sell their products to women. It's clear from the start that Dwight doesn't know how to respond properly when he's eavesdropping on a conversation. The women in the office then try to teach Dwight how to listen more.
