Essay / The Tragic Story of Ophelia and Hamlet - 1398
The Tragic Story of Ophelia and HamletThe common problem of lack of communication has tormented couples since the dawn of time. The relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia in Shakespeare's play Hamlet is no more immune to these human tendencies. Throughout the drama, many misunderstandings cloud their relationship. The unspoken problems and pressures in Ophelia and Hamlet's private lives lead to neglected and unnoticed love. For Hamlet, his bond with Ophelia is nothing compared to the weight of the obligation of the talionis imposed on his soul. Ophélie faces problems of a different nature. Having been raised to be very obedient to her father and let him think for her, she is forced to push Hamlet away and not give in to his love. It is the very lack of communication of these personal dilemmas between Ophelia and Hamlet that ultimately leads to Ophelia's untimely demise and brings Hamlet to the brink of hysteria. In the beginning, Ophelia is first introduced as she is warned by her brother, Laertes. He tells her to be wary of Hamlet, as his love for her may be short-lived and she is of unequal rank to him. Soon after, Ophelia's father, Polonius, joined the crusade, but in a more forceful manner. While treating her as if she were a child, he orders her to completely turn Hamlet away. After Ophelia tells him that Hamlet had expressed affection for her, Polonius responds, “Affection! pooh ! you speak like a green girl / Untamed in such perilous circumstances” (1.4.94-95). Thus, Ophelia is torn in two different directions: love for Hamlet and obedience to her father. As she was trained from birth, her father's desires put aside all other notions, and she responds as she often does...... middle of paper ......e / Whose property violent "makes itself" stating that he believed that Hamlet's obsession with Ophelia was the cause (2.2.99-100). Eventually, this is made clear when Hamlet jumps onto Ophelia's grave and Declares his love for him, however, their obvious love for each other is hidden under a blanket. As the couple is torn apart by forces beyond their control, they never tell each other, leading to misunderstandings between them. .To conclude, it is the very lack of communication in a relationship that can lead to misunderstandings of otherwise close bonds. In Hamlet, Ophelia and Hamlet are a great example of this and how it can lead to the ultimate misunderstanding:l. lost love. Work citedShakespeare, William England Eds: Scott, foreman., 1982. 136-201.
