  • Essay / Violence among the LGBT community - 1519

After reading a scientific journal (Guadalupe-Diaz, sex), I discovered that the author was trying to find out how often same-sex couples report domestic violence. Additionally, if there is a correlation between race, class, or gender and the amount of domestic violence, compare it to the amount of hate-motivated violence that occurred. The study that was conducted targeted same-sex couples and was conducted using surveys. The finding showed that, of the 993 gay participants, 494 were victims of domestic violence and 471 were victims of hate violence. Of the 494 participants who had experienced domestic violence, 228 were women and 128 were men. When it came to economic class, there was almost no relationship with the extent of domestic violence that occurred. Of the 471 victims of hate-motivated violence, 191 were women and 193 men. Once again, there is virtually no connection between economic class and victims of hate violence. The results are a little more stunning when it comes to reporting and seeking help. Of the 69 men identified as lower class, only 21.2% had sought formal help for domestic violence, 24.6% had sought informal help, and only 19.8% had called the police for hate violence. Of the 143 women identified as lower class, 29.4% sought formal help to combat domestic violence and 37.8% sought informal help, but only 10.1% called the police due to domestic violence. of hate-motivated violence. This shows that gay women are more likely to seek help after domestic violence, but less likely than gay men to call the police because of...... middle of paper ...... 955, a young black man was murdered. because he allegedly whistled at a white woman on a bus. The two people responsible for the murder of this young man were acquitted of murder by an all-white jury. (Borgna Brunner, 2007, “A Timeline of Black History from the Beginnings of the Slave Trade to Affirmative Action”) Once society was able to progress and realize that these laws were morally wrong , laws were changed and America was able to move forward. I have a feeling that in about ten years America will look back on this and realize that the way they treat the LGBTQ community is morally wrong. Hopefully once this happens the laws will change and they will be treated like "normal" people. Until then, society as a whole should try to support the process and contribute to creating a solution to the struggle that the LGBTQ community faces daily..
