IntroductionMaintenance management has evolved over a long period of time. The incorporation of maintenance management as a subsystem of an organization is indicative of its central role in supporting business objectives. Maintenance management is defined as the combination of all associated technical and administrative actions intended to preserve an asset, or restore it to a condition in which it can perform its required function. (British Standards 3811:1993). This is a broad definition that encompasses major aspects that were missing in older versions, as pointed out by John Moubray, 2000-Reading 1-1. The inclusion of “associated administrative actions” and “maintaining an item in its required function” makes this definition more relevant to current maintenance management trends. Fundamental elements of maintenance management The fundamental elements of a good maintenance system are therefore those which combine technical and administrative aspects. actions. As Moubray states, Maintenance Management-A New Paradigm, 2000, the repair of a machine or component goes beyond the operation and aims to ensure that the component "operates within the desired specifications." Professionals must be competent enough and test the equipment to ensure that the component performs to the manufacturer's required standards. Legal and regulatory requirements are also required to qualify professionals as competent, including site and area orientation. The other requirement included is environmental considerations. They also need to be distributed to use specialized tools. Organizations spend a lot of resources purchasing specialized tools to minimize downtime and maintain high security standards. Other tools that may need to be organized include cranes, forks...... middle of paper......weekly, monthly and annual maintenance performance indicators.Works CitedBritish Standards 3811:1993, ENMM20010 Introduction to Maintenance Management, Division of Teaching and Learning Services, Central Queensland University, Rockhampton.Kelly, T 1997, ENMM20010, Introduction to Maintenance Management, Division of Teaching and Learning Services, Central Queensland University, Rockhampton.Moore, R 2002, ENMM20010 Introduction to Maintenance Management, Division of Teaching and Learning Services, Central Queensland University, Rockhampton Moubray, J 2000, http://www.maintenanceresources.com/reference library, RCM/Predictive Maintenance management-a new paradigm' (accessed January 24, 2005) Sherwin, D 2000, A review of global models for maintenance management' Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering, vol.6, no.3, pp.138-164, Emerald database.
