Essay / Learning Environment - 1100
Structure in an elementary classroom is necessary for learning and rules help implement structure and balance. The class would be chaotic, messy, and unlikely to learn without rules. As a teacher, we must create an environment that promotes learning, prevents stress, and allows the teacher to be in control during the day. Safety is a teacher's most important job and rules are necessary to keep students safe throughout the day. Developing rules can and should involve students in the classroom. Students should be able to distinguish between why we have these rules and what they are. To do this, the teacher can set up a demonstration of what it means to have no rules. Holding a driving lesson in class, without road signs or lines, would allow students to see what it's like without rules. The students pretended they were cars and had to go to another location. It would be chaotic, painful and they probably wouldn't make it to their destination. This would show students how bad it can be without rules. Then the teacher could organize another lesson involving road lines, road signs and driving rules. They would try to get to the same destination as before and could see how easy it was to get to the destination with rules. Then lead a discussion about each route and which one allowed them to arrive at their destination safely. Relate the roadway to the rules in a classroom and explain the purpose of the rules. Next, divide students into groups and after explaining why the rules are important, ask the children to divide into groups and come up with a set of 6-8 rules. They would list the rules and give reasons why they think each rule is... middle of paper ... try to reinforce good behavior, which is more likely to give you the answer you want. However, there are situations where sanctions are necessary. Punishments may include detention, indoor suspension, outdoor suspension, chores (in some cases for younger grades this may actually be a reward), non-recess minutes, after school or a message home. Keep the class calm and serene. It is very important that students follow the basic rules. It's much easier for you to teach and for them to learn if you don't have to worry about scolding someone every five seconds. The teacher is more comfortable and can deliver the curriculum to the students much faster and more appropriately. I believe it is more important for the teacher to know about classroom management rather than the material they are teaching..
