Have you ever gotten up early on a Saturday morning with excitement to go shopping and score great deals? The journey begins with a car ride, driving while humming to your favorite song. Suddenly distracted by the brightly colored signs announcing the upcoming farmers market. The car got closer to discovering baskets full of apples and oranges, carrots, potatoes and green leafy vegetables. The aroma of fresh strawberries in the air makes me think; this is not a traditional grocery store where spending on healthy foods puts a strain on the budget. These are local vendors who serve directly outside the neighborhood, which turns out to be a short trip that saves money on gas and makes the whole trip worthwhile. Even though locally grown foods are cheaper, healthy eating should be affordable for everyone because it reduces the risk of disease, motivates people to eat better, and encourages them to buy them. Eating carrots is proven to help the retina. and other parts of the eye function properly (Health Magazine/Mind & Body, 2014), as well as broccoli is a source of calcium (The Editors of Publication International, Ltd., 2007), which strengthens bones, and blueberries give strength to the nervous system. Since such foods have nutritional value for our body, why are they the most expensive on the market? According to Polis, "The most comprehensive study of its kind indicates that yes, unhealthy foods cost about $1.50 less per day, or about $550 per year, than healthy foods."
